The outlet Politico published a story on 26 August last year, giving an overview of peatland restoration along NATO’s eastern flank as a potential physical barrier that could be used to hinder a possible advance by enemy forces. While debates on this topic were already under way in Finland and Poland, the journalist wrote at the time that the Baltic states showed no interest in the issue. Based on fresh inquiries, it can be said that Estonia is the only one for whom this diagnosis still holds true – and this is not necessarily a problem, writes editor Meelis Oidsalu.
