US President Donald Trump’s aggressive Greenland policy has cranked up tensions that, in experts’ assessment, could end with the breakup of NATO’s internal unity. For now the alliance is still holding together, and it is in our interest to keep it that way. At the same time, the latest statements by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen clearly show that Europe has decided to rise as a military great power on the global stage. The prospects for this are good: we are the world’s second‐largest economy, and our current security risks speak in favour of this ambition, writes Member of the European Parliament Riho Terras (Isamaa).
